Srinagar, Feb 18 (KNO): Amid growing speculation about the installation of water meters in Kashmir, the Jal Shakti Department on Tuesday clarified that no such proposal has been received for the region as of now. Speaking with the news agency - Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a senior official from the department said that while the government holds the authority to decide on the matter, there is no official directive or plan currently under consideration. "As of now, the Jal Shakti Department has not received any proposal or order from the government regarding the installation of water meters in Kashmir," the official confirmed. The official also spoke about the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), a centrally-sponsored initiative aimed at providing safe drinking water to all households. He said that over 85% of households in Kashmir now have access to drinking water, with expectations of achieving 100% coverage by March 31, 2025. Water metering is the process of measuring water usage in residential and commercial buildings, the official said, adding that it helps in monitoring consumption, improving water management, and ensuring efficient distribution through public water supply systems.
